Band of brothers sings in Umzumbe

THE Gus Brown Band was formed when guitar-wielding brothers, Dale and Nick, caught the attention of singer Gavin while jamming around a braai fire back in 2012. Escape was futile and before Dale and Nick knew it Gavin had raided Dale’s catalogue of original tunes. And so a band was formed around the braai fire, on Gus Brown Road.

A little later, the group added the musical genius of two more brothers, twins bassist Barry and drummer Ryan, bringing together the beautiful elements of a dysfunctional and yet funky family.

As artists, the band members hate to be pigeonholed into a genre, but many describe their sound at soulful funk. Gus Brown has been spotted on the stages of the Splashy Fen and White Mountain festivals for the last few years. Now the band is spending plenty of time in the studio, working on its first EP.

If you haven’t seen Gus Brown, do yourself a favour and book your table at The Rock Music Bistro in Umzumbe this Saturday, March 28. The band will play from about 9pm, after the rugby. Book by telephoning Shirley at 072 1415621. These musos, who have supported many big name South African bands, are truly talented and deserve to be heard.

The Rock will host its usual ‘Pull in, plug in and play’ Sunday afternoon session, hosted by Oscar Swanlund. Expect to hear the famous rock band, Braxton Hix, this week.
