Dress up as a pirate on ‘Salty Saturday’

DON’T be surprised to see a pirate or two mingling with the crowds at the Spiller’s Wharf Heritage Festival at Port Shepstone’s Spiller’s Wharf riverside complex on Wednesday, September 24 to 28.

A couple of old sea dogs have threatened to drop in, tell some hoary sea dog stories and cause a little buccaneer mayhem on the Saturday morning of the festival, which will have a pirate theme in their honour. The Saturday morning family entertainment will also have a salty flavour and guests – adults and well as children – are invited to dress up as pirates.

The first day of the festival is the Heritage Day public holiday and Spiller’s will honour this auspicious occasion with a programme of events designed to highlight the rainbow nature of the multicultural South Coast community. There will be Hindu and Zulu dancing, some volkspele, a performance by a Scottish pipe band and other interesting cultural events.

The first-day programme will also include the official launch of the ongoing Spiller’s Wharf Heritage Photograph Project and the first photographs submitted for this project will be on display.

It is hoped local people will submit interesting old photographs or modern photographs of artefacts and historical sites. The idea of the project is to stage an ever-changing but permanent display, illustrating the South Coast’s fascinating history, at the wharf complex. Monthly prizes will be given to people who submit the most fascinating original or scanned photographs.

The Sports and Specials contemporary and classic sports cars and other special vehicles will be on show at Spiller’s Wharf on Sunday morning, the final day of the festival. Throughout the five-day event there will be all sorts of entertainment and plenty of restaurant specials.
