Help keep our beaches clean
SOUTH Coast residents are invited to be part of a global marine clean-up involving thousands of people from all around the world, on Saturday, September 21, International Coastal Clean-up Day.
The American Centre for Marine Conservation held the first clean-up on the Texas coast in 1986. That year 2 800 litterbusters took part. Since then it has ballooned into a massive global event, with about half a million people in more than 100 countries taking part.
Originally, the idea was to clear litter from the coastlines of the world but the International Coastal Clean-up now includes cleaning inland lakes, rivers, streams and underwater sites and is now the world’s largest voluntary effort to care for the ocean.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife officials and honorary officer Allan Williams are co-ordinating the Hibiscus Coast clean-up.
Most of the local conservancies and many local schools will be taking part.
If you are a member of a conservancy and would like to assist, contact your committee members.
Individuals, schools and members of service clubs who would like to be part of this global clean-up can also contact the officials in charge of their areas. They will then be directed to the coastal sections where their help will be most appreciated.
