Local artists show off their talents

One of Grant Wood's gentle watercolours. See his art and work by other local artists and crafters at Bayview Gallery in Umzumbe these holidays.

TALENTED KwaZulu-Natal artists and crafters will show their work at the Bayview Gallery and Fine Crafts in Station Road, Umzumbe, throughout the December holidays from Friday, December 6.

Based in Marianhill, Hoffman Handweaving has, for the last 70 years, created a kaleidoscope of natural-fibre hand-woven rungs. Some of these colourful creations will be included in the art display. Murray McGibbon of Umzumbe is best known as a theatre personality and an award-winning director and producer. He will show his beautiful picture postcards, which reflect the passion he feels for the South Coast’s natural environment.

Flamboyant local artist, Bridgette Defilippi highlights her love of surfing and the ocean by creating driftwood Christmas trees. Sylvia D’Alton, a busy career woman, still finds time to run a catering business and to create her renowned home-baked delights. Health, wellness and beauty are Mary Wood’s passions and her natural range of pampering products bears testimony to this.

Kez Ringo, an experienced, qualified chef, is famous for her decadently delicious fudge. Reel Fincham, aka the galloping granny on the tennis courts, is also a fine palette wielder when it comes to oils and acrylics. Grant Wood, painter of gentle watercolours, is a self-taught South Coast artist.

Recently retired, George Watson now devotes his time to his hobby, photography, aiming his lens at local beaches. Artistic photographer Pippa Richards is also taking part in the show. Something a little different is Betsy Tarboton’s collection of practical pottery, a delight to the eye and a reflection of her love of life.

A retired Swiss professional, LLoyd Haber, believes that bright colours are uplifting but that darker shades are needed to give contrast and power to his explosive art. Laia Gerrard expresses her Spanish roots in her lovingly created mosaics. Finally, Trish Wood, of Italian descent, has a finely developed sense of style that sparked her self-taught hobby. She creates superb handbags out of quality leather.
