Saxophonist visits Port Shepstone

KHAYA ‘Hayane’ Dlamini, a popular Durban saxophonist, is undertaking a three-gig tour of KwaZulu, supported by Concerts SA and is visiting the South Coast this week.

For Durban jazz fans, Khaya is a household name and he is respected for his versatility and a style that fuses jazz, a little bit of funk and the Southern African sounds.

His Afro-Jazz grooves invite the listener into the rhythm of quality sound. Jazz enthusiasts from the South will remember him as that funky sax player from

Sankomota; Sarafina 2, and the touring production of Isikhulu; and as part of Durban outfit called ‘Just Friends’.

His song, “Utshwala’ was nominated for a Sama award in the Afro category and has been – and still is – used as a theme for a lot of awareness programmes.

Khaya and his trio will be at a free concert at Mhawu High School, Engonyameni, Umbumbulu, on Thursday, June 25 at noon. They will be at Esayidi College in Port Shepstone on June 26 at 2pm. Entrance is R30 for adults and R15 for students. The final gig will be at 1137 Ntombela Road, Kwa-Mashu on June 28 at 3pm.
