All welcome at this family sports day
WHEN it comes to sports and outdoor recreation, Uvongo has plenty to offer, as visitors to the Uvongo family sports day will discover.
This takes place in the Ivungu River Reserve, next to the Striders Athletics Clubhouse, on Sunday May 6 from 10am to 2pm. The Ivungu River Conservancy is co-hosting this event with Striders, Uvongo Tennis Club and the Riverside Bowling Club. All three sports clubs will open their clubhouses to the public.
The conservancy takes care of the Ivungu River Reserve and helps to keep Saints Walk, the shoreline pathway between St Michael’s and Uvongo, free of invasive aliens. Members will set up an information table at the family sports day. They will happily answer questions about the conservancy’s work or enrol interested people as new members. A limited number of booklets on the reserve will be available for a small donation.
Conservancy members will also lead an organised walk along the trail that winds through the reserve, at 11am. However visitors can do this trail on their own any time during the day.
Saints Walk is used as the route for the Uvongo parkrun, which starts at St Michael’s Beach every Saturday morning at 8am. Uvongo parkrunners will be at the information table to answer any questions about this fun way to keep fit. Striders members will also be there to chat about their club’s many activities and will provide braai facilities.
Anyone for tennis? Uvongo Tennis Club will open its courts to the public on the family sports day, so bring along your tennis rackets. The club will also have cold drinks on sale.
The Riverside clubhouse will be open for business and the bowlers will be there to chat about their club and their sport. They will also fire up their pizza oven and provide bar facilities.
Entrance to the family day is free, so pack a picnic or braai hamper, bring the family and enjoy an interesting outdoor day in beautiful surroundings. If you are a birder, bring your binoculars. The Ivungu River reserve is one of the South Coast’s birding hot spots.
