What began around a kitchen table has grown into a regular food support programme for families on the lower South Coast.
Maggie Sloan, who now runs Maggie’s South Coast Foundation, feeds 30 families from Melville to Umtentweni.
The drive provides a food parcel once a month and a hot meal at least twice a month for families experiencing financial hardship.
Maggie started the initiative after seeing people in her community struggling to afford necessities.
“I kept seeing families in our South Coast communities struggling – choosing between food and school fees, between dignity and asking for help. I couldn’t just watch,” she said.
She began by cooking meals at home and delivering them to families in need. The work has since grown into a wider community effort.
Maggie said the focus is not only on providing food, but also on treating people with dignity and building relationships with those who receive assistance.
“This is my community. These are my people,” she said.
Maggie hopes the initiative will continue to grow so that more families on the South Coast can receive support when they need it.
