THE Hibiscus Coast Municipality says the new Audi Q7 Quattro 3-litre TDi vehicle recently purchased for its mayor, Cynthia Mqwebu, is a necessity.
AfriForum has raised concerns about the mayor’s new car which is worth about R800 000, saying it was too expensive.
AfriForum feels this is exorbitant, and a wasteful expenditure of ratepayers’ money. The organisation suggested the money could have been better used to improve people’s lives.
“The old mayoral vehicle was not in good working condition, as evidenced by its breaking down on numerous occasions. This situation obviously compromised the functioning of the office of the mayor, and this prompted council to unanimously resolve to source a new vehicle for the mayor’s use,” said HCM spokesman, Simon Soboyisa.
“I need to also state for the record that the mayor’s responsibilities require that she must be able to access all communities within the jurisdiction of the municipality. In executing her duties, she will travel for extended periods of time in the vehicle, hence it is important that such vehicle is not only sturdy but also comfortable,” he concluded.
