THE Durban Commercial Crime Unit arrested a 34-year-old South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) employee in Umzimkhulu for fraud and theft. Between February and May this year, the expenditure on one of Sassa’s petrol cards had inexplicably skyrocketed.
Investigations revealed that the petrol card had been used to fill the state vehicle two or three times a day. The mileage travelled however did not warrant multiple fills. In some instances, the card had been used to fill vehicles which did not belong to the state and in other cases, fictitious number plates were used when filling the vehicle with petrol.
All of these transactions occurred at the same filling station in Umzimkhulu. The fraudulent transactions added up to R67 000. The man has appeared in the Durban Commercial Crime Court.
