AN elderly woman, who was brutally attacked while asleep in her Port Shepstone home, fought bravely to save her life.
The 80-year-old woman, who has lived most of her life on the South Coast, was woken by a man standing in front of her bed last Thursday at around 2am.
According to police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, the man gained entry by forcing open the burglar guards on a window.
During the struggle the man demanded money, punched her, attempted to rape her and threatened to kill her.
He also attempted to stab her with a knife the size of a ruler. However, she managed to deflect the knife with her hand and sustained a cut.
The woman fought hard, kicking, screaming and scratching her attacker. “I will never know where I got the strength of a bull from to fight off my attacker. I just begged God to save me,” she said.
The woman ran and locked herself in the bathroom after her attacker left her.
At around 5.30am, she called to her neighbours from the bathroom window to help her and was taken to hospital.
She explained that her whole body had been bruised and the back of her neck injured when the man placed a pillow over her face to muffle her screams.
“I couldn’t walk for three days as my knees were so sore from kicking him,” she said.
The men fled with several items, including two televisions, cellphones and her handbag.
Police are investigating a case of house robbery and attempted rape.
No arrests have been made.
