Two Harding robbers sentenced

The hitch-hiker was ordered to run into the sugar cane.

TWO men have been convicted and sentenced in Ezinqoleni Regional court recently for robbery and possession of an unlicenced fire arm and ammunition.

Their arrests followed after they attacked and robbed a hitch-hiker along the main road between Harding and Port Shepstone in July.

“The hitch-hiker was approached by two men, who attacked him and threatened him at gunpoint,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

“They robbed him of his cash, a driver’s licence, bank cards and a cellphone. The victim was then instructed to run into the sugar cane plantation. He saw the direction the robbers had taken and later reported the matter to Harding police,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

Warrant Officer Luvoyo Sinama and Constable Sanele Ngcongo assisted the victim before searching for the two suspects. They were spotted and arrested.

A firearm with two live rounds and the hitch-hiker’s belongings were recovered.

Phikolomzi Lunwayi (21) and Phumlani Sanganga (21) made several court appearances in Ezinqoleni Regional Court. They were convicted and sentenced recently.

Lunwayoi was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment for robbery and for being in possession of unlicenced firearm and ammunition. Sanganga received 12 years’ imprisonment for robbery.

W/O Sinama, Const Ngcongo and Detective Constable Siyabonga Gasa were commended by Station Commander Colonel Hendriena Grundling for the quick arrests and the thorough investigation of the case.
