Beware bogus meter readers

Be careful when allowing strangers onto your property.

SOUTHPORT police are investigating a case of cable theft after cables were found on a truck.

“No arrests have been made as yet, as police are obtaining the necessary statements,” confirmed police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

In a separate, but possibly linked, incident, a Southport resident informed the Herald about what he believes are bogus electricity meter readers, posing as Eskom staff.

He warned the community to be careful after two men, dressed in blue overalls, cleared an opening through his fence and entered his property. He said a silver vehicle had dropped the men off.

The men were wearing blue overalls with white writing on the back. The vehicle had a logo as well.

When the man confronted the men they said they were looking for his electricity meter.

“One of the men walked to the back of my house, while the other stayed in the front of my property,” he said.

He described one of the men as being strongly built and of medium height, while his accomplice was slender in build.

Attempts to get comment from Eskom proved unsuccessful.
