SIX out of the 21 computers which were recently donated to Bheki Secondary School by the MTN Foundation have been stolen.
The deputy minister of communications, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams handed the computers, a printer and a projector to the school on August 8.
Two days later, six computers and a server went missing. Pupils toyi-toyied outside the school and refused to go to class, accusing the school’s principal of stealing the computers.
“We want to know what happened to the computers,” said one of the students who asked not to be named.
The student added that this was not the first time that computers had gone missing from the school, despite there being a security guard on the premises.
“We want to know from the guard what happened as we are convinced he knows who took these computers,” said the angry student.
Police spokesman Captain Gerald Mfeka has confirmed that a case had been opened at the Port Edward police station.
“We were not aware of this unfortunate incident, and we are going to ask our district officials to investigate these allegations,” said Sihle Mlotshwa, spokesman for the department of education.
“It is unfortunate that pupils have stopped going to class as a result of this. They should go back to class while the matter gets the attention it deserves,’ he concluded.
