CHILDLINE KwaZulu-Natal is on the brink of collapse due to lack of funds.
Mervyn Sigamoney, chairman of Childline KZN, said that the organisation had always been in a positive position, but recent funding delays by the National Lottery, coupled with a changed focus by some previous donors, has left the organisation in a critical situation.
“We have had to suspend some of our services due to the financial crisis,” said Mr Sigamoney. With only enough funds available to see it through the next few weeks, the organisation now faces closure
“We need around R7-million to ensure our operations continue for another 12 months. This may sound like a lot, but we reach more than 500 000 children a year. This equates to approximately R14 a child. Just R14 to help save a child – I don’t think that’s too much to ask.”
You can make a difference. Sms the word ‘hero’ to 39555 (SMSes costs R15), and R15 will automatically be donated to Childline KZN. You may donate as many times as you wish. Free or bundled minutes do not apply and only South African residents can donate via sms.
