‘Hit mom’ fit for trial

Her lawyer said she is not mentally ill.

August 29

THE Gamalakhe mother who had allegedly ordered a hit on her two sons, was sent for psychiatric observation.

This was heard at a packed Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Wednesday), where Makhosazana Langeni (50) made her second appearance, charged on two counts of conspiracy to commit murder. Her lawyer said she is not mentally ill, making her fit to stand trial.

She will make her third appearance next Wednesday, September 4 for bail application.

Ms Langeni had allegedly approached a relative who had recently been released on parole from prison to carry out the hit, because she believed that he was brave enough to do it.

The woman had taken out multiple life policies on her two sons, Nakzimulo (21) and Nkanyiso (24).

She allegedly wanted them dead to claim on the insurance policies she had taken out on their lives, said police.

“The ‘hit man’ could not bear the thought of returning to jail and tipped the police off about her alleged plot,” said police spokesman Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

The hit man was told to go back to the woman and tell her that he had found someone else to do the job. The person posing as the second hit man was an undercover policeman,” said Col Mdunge.

On August 14, a meeting between the woman and the undercover policeman took place in Port Shepstone, where details of the alleged plot to kill her sons were discussed.

The price of each murder was allegedly R25 000 and she had asked the hit man for a discount because she was giving him two jobs.

“She also said that, if he carried out the hits successfully, she would give him three more jobs. She had planned to take out her other children as well. She had life insurance cover on all of them.”

Last Tuesday she promised to provide the hit man with photos to enable him to identify her sons before committing the murders,” said Col Mdunge.

During the meeting she handed him photos as well as R350 for his expenses.

After the exchange, she was arrested and police found insurance documents on her.

Col Mdunge said the operation had been captured on video.

Once the community had put a face to Ms Langeni, it was questioning the death of her husband, who died several years ago.

Many had thought that his death was suspicious.

A GAMALAKHE mother (50) was arrested on Tuesday this week for plotting the murder of her two sons.

The arrest was carried out by police from Port Shepstone Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Crime Intelligence and the KwaDukuza Cluster Task Team.

The woman had recruited a relative to carry out the double murder, but the family member reported her to the police.

“The hit was reported to the Port Shepstone DPCI, who also roped in members from Crime Intelligence,” said provincial police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker.

“Last Wednesday, a meeting between the mother and a police official posing as a hit man took place in Port Shepstone where details of the plot to kill her sons were discussed. The price of each murder was R25 000 but she requested a discount because she was giving the hit man two jobs,” said Col Naicker.

The mother had also promised the hit man three more jobs should he pull these two off successfully.

The alleged motive for the killing was that she wanted to claim on insurance policies she had taken out on her sons.

Terms were agreed on, and on August 20, she promised to provide the hit man with photos to enable him to identify her sons before committing the murders.

“During a meeting at Gamalakhe the mother handed over photos of her sons as well as R350 for expenses. After the exchange police arrested the woman and found her in possession of insurance documents, as well as four other identity documents,” said Col Naicker.

She will appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court today (Thursday) where she will face charges of conspiracy to commit murder.

The Gamalakhe community was stunned to hear about the incident, asking what kind of person would want to do this to their children.
