Another Ugu official suspected of fraud

His alleged accomplice is an employee of another local municipality.

ANOTHER Ugu District municipal official is facing fraud and corruption charges.

Ugu municipal manager ‘DD’ Naidoo told media at a press briefing held on Monday, that the charges came as a result of a fraudulent letter of appointment issued to a service provider. The fake letter appointed the provider to supply 5000 eco taps to 5000 houses within the district, to the value of R6 250 000.

Mr Naidoo added that while investigations into the allegations were in progress, the employee tendered an official letter of resignation on August 8, giving a month’s notice. The employee also revealed that his accomplice is an employee at another local municipality.

“We are pursuing an internal disciplinary hearing while the official is still in our employ,” said Mr Naidoo.

“The municipality regards the allegation as very serious, and feels it warrants a criminal charge being opened against the employee. The police have been contacted in this regard. All the necessary documentation and affidavits have been prepared for forward submission to the police.”
