Car park is an eyesore

The leak has provided a business opportunity.

ONGOING water leaks have become a business opportunity for entrepreneurs at the former Dick King parking lot in Port Shepstone.

The parking lot, which serves the Port Shepstone Court and the police station, is now swamped by men armed with buckets, soap and cloths making easy cash by washing vehicles, using free water from a leaking pipe. According to those who work in the area, water has been leaking from this pipe for the past year.

Ugu District Municipality has been contacted about the leaking water pipe on numerous occasions but still nothing has been done about the problem. “Why is the municipality allowing this to go on?” asked a concerned businessman.”Who is paying for this water and why aren’t these car washers charged?”

A regular visitor to Port Shepstone said the parking lot is falling apart. “The area is filthy, there is sewage flowing freely, litter is strewn around, there are no parking bays and there are potholes,” he said. He added that he had also seen state vehicles being washed on numerous occasions.
