SOME 300 textile workers at MB Workwear in Marburg are still on strike after downing tools last Thursday. The staff expressed their anger and frustration on the streets of Marburg over a dispute regarding wage increases for the month of September. A shop steward from the company said workers have other grievances with the company.
In July, staff also took to the streets and burnt tyres as a sign of their dissatisfaction. The action was sparked when a small group of the company’s production staff embarked on a work stoppage.
Employees are still protesting outside the premises. At around midday tyres were set alight by the striking workers. Firefighters were called and the fire was put out. No injuries were reported.
The Herald contacted Roeloff Quinn, the company’s legal and compliance manager last Thursday and again on Tuesday this week for comment but at the time of writing, had not received a reply. Police have been monitoring the situation since Thursday.
