Litter bugs could be brought to book

Illegal dumping continues in the Red Desert Nature Reserve.

A BUILDING plan found in a pile of rubbish illegally dumped in the Red Desert Nature Reserve recently, could help the reserve trustees track down the culprits.

Chairman of the trust, Matt Williams, is asking anyone who recognises the plans to contact him. There is a cash reward on offer for information that leads to the identification of the guilty parties.

Littering in the reserve, situated near Port Edward, is a constant headache for the trustees and the latest incident of illegal dumping was most distressing. Large piles of unsightly building rubble and other rubbish were dumped near the soccer field near the Pont Road access point. The waste material included what appears to be air-conditioning ducts, possibly discarded by a contractor completing quite a big air conditioning contract, perhaps for a local supermarket, hotel or shopping centre.

The trustees are determined to find out who dumped the rubbish in the reserve and would be grateful for any information.

Mr Williams also cautioned people against driving in the reserve. He said the Red Desert was not yet officially open to the public and was definitely closed to all vehicles including trucks, tractors, off-road vehicles, motorbikes and bicycles. Drivers of vehicles found in the reserve would be prosecuted. Vehicles could be impounded and even confiscated by the authorities, he added.

If you have any information about dumping or other illegal activities in the reserve, contact him at 039 6950460 or 083 6319331.
