Farmers celebrate centenary

Members took a stroll down memory lane.

THE Umzumbe and District Farmers’ Association recently celebrated its centenary at ‘The Cellar’ restaurant. At the dinner members travelled down memory lane, reflecting on the association’s history.

The association was formed in 1913 and was first called Umzumbe Farmers’ Association. It later changed its name to Umzumbe and District Farmers’ Association because of its involvement in the wider parts of Umzumbe.

Former president Andy Wheelwright gave a brief talk on the history of the association. “The loyalty of members and dedication of office bearers over the years has kept the association going, through good and bad times,” he said.

He added that one president held office for more than 20 years, and the secretary has also served for more than 30 years.

A booklet of the history of the association has been produced to commemorate the centenary.
