SANDILE Gumede (23) a member of the Hibberdene Community Policing Forum, was shot and killed last Saturday night when he and two colleagues went looking for a suspect at the local tavern. They were apparently confronted by an armed suspect who opened fire on them, killing Gumede and leaving his colleagues seriously injured.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has expressed anger and disappointment at the murder, saying this was a serious setback in the battle against crime.
“Members of Community Policing Forums are selfless people who volunteer their time to serve the community and to contribute towards a fight against crime. They should be the most valued members of the public,” said Mr Mchunu.“Unfortunately they are now being targeted by the rogue and criminal elements who want to impose themselves on the community.”
Cases of murder and attempted murder have been registered and are being investigated by the police.
