SEVERAL liquor dealers on the South Coast were charged for contravening the liquor act recently. They were visited by Port Shepstone SAPS Liquor Officer, Warrant Officer Andries van Aarde.
He charged the owners for offences in contravention of the liquor act. They were all issued with written notices to appear in court, or pay admission of guilt fines.
“Tevarnada Clayton Naidoo of Talk of the Town tavern paid an admission of guilt fine of R500 for selling liquor as off-consumption on an on-consumption licensed premises,” said police spokesman Captain Vincent Pandarum.
Thandekile Prudence Qwabe of Thokoza Tavern paid an admission of guilt fine of R500 for allowing drunkenness, or licentious conduct, on a licensed premises.
Karl Mulligan, who runs the Tweni Beach kiosk, paid a fine of R300 for selling liquor from the kiosk without a licence.
Patience Nokukhanya Mhlangu, of Umnafu Tavern, paid an admission of guilt fine of R1 000 for failing to appoint a manager in terms of the Act, and for failing, or refusing, to comply with the conditions of her licence by renting out the licenced premises.
“Other liquor outlets can expect unannounced visits from the liquor officer and the police in general. As we approach the festive season, we will intensify policing of taverns and liquor outlets in an effort to curb offences arising from the consumption of liquor,” said Captain Pandarum.
