THEMBA Herman Khawula (35) was shot in the abdomen and robbed of his cellphone near Langa Tuck Shop in Betania last Saturday night. He was taken to hospital where he subsequently died. Two shots were fired at Themba’s brother, Clive, but both missed their target. The attack was allegedly carried out by three men, believed to be from Quintabout in Gamalakhe. The shooting was not reported to the SAPS.
Linda Ngeleka (30) and Sandile Mazubane (25) were later found severely beaten near the Zama Zama Store in Betania. Angry Betania community members are alleged to have carried out the assault. Ngeleka was pronounced dead at the scene. There was no sign of the third suspect.
On Monday night this week, a group of approximately 16 men arrived at Andile Gumede’s residence in Quinabout, Gamalakhe. They were armed with knives, knobkerries, spears and sjamboks. They asked Gumede’s mother where he was before kicking down his bedroom door and breaking the windows. Gumede, accused by the mob of being the third suspect involved in the robbery and shooting of the Khawula brothers the previous night, was severely beaten and stabbed before being driven away in a bakkie. He suffered serious injuries to his face and body.
Port Shepstone detectives are investigating two counts of murder and two of attempted murder while Gamalakhe detectives are investigating charges of attempted murder, malicious injury to property and kidnapping. Fourteen suspects have been arrested and detained for the attack on Gumede and are expected to appear in court later this week.
