JAI HIND hosted its annual speech and awards banquet last Friday at the Port Shepstone Secondary hall. Local doctor, Feroze Khan, was the guest of honour and his ‘motivational injection’ was exactly what the doctor ordered.
Crisp speeches addressing the challenges facing the school, its potential and promise, by both the acting principal, Rosh Audan, and the school governing body chairman, Reuben Judnarain, encapsulated the dynamic ethos of the school.
Sally Kavanagh, host for the evening, kept the banquet’s glitz and glamour catapulting right through to its grand finale and punctuated by sweet sorrow as Akshay Singh and Sarncia Naidoo bade farewell on behalf of the gr 7 class of 2013. The top ten achievers in each grade and outstanding performers per subject in gr 7 also received accolades.
Having scooped four of the subject awards, and being one of the overall top ten achievers, Akshay Singh took the Dux cum Dwarka award, as well as the ‘Gail Papli Memorial Trophy’ for unsurpassed achievement in science.
By unanimous vote, deputy head girl, Chlöe Breda received the prestigious ‘Good Fellowship’ award, accolades for top achievement in two subjects, as well as being a top ten award winner.
Hayden Govender received the ‘Malcolm Moonsamy Memorial’ trophy for sporting greatness and was crowned sports boy for 2013, with Nolwazi Mbuthuma as the reigning sports girl.
A moving valediction by the outgoing head prefects and the banquet’s closing ceremony saw the announcement and induction of the executive of the prefect body for 2014, and the unanimous incumbents were Taheer Govender (head boy), Sufyaan Saeed (deputy), Aerin-Lee Martin (head girl), and Danelle Naidoo (deputy).
