Port Shepstone social activist attends memorial statue unveiling

As the fifth anniversary of Babita Deokaran's assassination coincided with Women’s Day, her family remembered her.

Well-known Port Shepstone social activist, Selvan Chetty, co-directed the programme at the unveiling of a memorial statue in honour of the late Babitha Deokaran.

Deokaran, the CFO of the Gauteng Department of Health, was assassinated outside her Johannesburg home in August 2021 after uncovering evidence of widespread corruption and procurement irregularities at Tembisa Hospital.

The unveiling was held on Women’s Day, August 9, at the Mt Edgecombe Shree Mariammen Temple Society.

“It was an honour and privilege for me, as a trustee of the Port Shepstone Hindu Cultural Federation, to have co-directed the programme with Kamcilla Naidoo. The event was a major success, making national and international news. It was an honour to be given this responsibility. The occasion was a tribute to Babita, a whistle-blower and anti-corruption fighter. Over 2000 people saluted this patriotic South African,” said Selvan.
