Mother and child taken hostage

They were tied up and left abandoned in the getaway vehicle.

A SEVEN-year-old boy and his mother from Boboyi were held hostage while shopping at the ABC trading store in Boboyi last Sunday.

Four men, armed with handguns, entered the trading store at about 4.30pm, demanding cash, cigarettes and airtime.

“When men were about to leave the shop, they spotted a policeman who was attending to another complaint,” said police spokesman Lieutenant -Colonel Zandra Wiid.

The  men then grabbed the mother and herchild and used them as hostages in order to  flee the scene.

A while later, the shop owner’s vehicle, in which the robbers had fled, was found abandoned in the Mtengwane ward, Murchison.

The woman and the child, who were tied up in the vehicle, were freed  by community members. Neither was injured. No arrests have been made and Port Shepstone police are investigating.
