ALTHOUGH a number of houses were burgled in Uvongo during December, crime statistics were down compared to the previous December and were lower than the Uvongo Community Safety Forum had anticipated.
The forum is however concerned to note that 30 percent of the housebreakings occurred during the last week of December and that there have been a further three of these incidents since January 1.
“This indicates that we again have a bad element roaming the streets in our area. Most of these crimes occurred around midnight,” said forum chairman Ernest Booysen.
The Svea and Broadway Avenues area has been without any housebreakings for many months but has now experienced four in the last week, so residents of this area should be on the alert for suspicious activity. Residents are also asked to warn holidaymakers in this area that they could be particularly targeted by burglars.
“Take special precautions during the night. Set alarm systems when going out or, if possible, while you are sleeping. Do not hesitate to call for assistance or to report suspicious people in your area,” advised Mr Booysen.
