Horror intersection claims another life

Pupils and pedestrians are still dicing with death on the N2 near Merlewood.

THE notorious stretch of the N2 road at Merlewood/Boboyi has claimed another life, with a 50-year-old man being knocked over and killed on Monday this week.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said that the man had been hit by a taxi at about 6am. “The man is said to have suddenly stepped in front of the taxi and that the driver could not avoid the collision. The man died from his injuries.”

The area is already considered extremely high risk and dangerous, with pedestrians needing to cross this intersection to get to work. In addition, many schoolchildren also cross the road at this point. To make matters worse, vehicles have usually picked up speed by the time they reach this spot.

The residents are outraged, disappointed and worried. They have made a number of attempts in the past to get the matter addressed but it seems nothing has been done. “This matter has received zero attention,” said one resident. “At the very least we would have expected traffic calming measures to be put in place to protect the pedestrians from fast moving vehicles.”

Ward 17 councillor Ajith Rajaram said he is in talks with the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in an attempt to find a solution.
