SECURITY officials at the Southcoast Mall in Shelly Beach, who were on routine patrol around the premises last Sunday, noticed movement on the roof of the mall at about 1am. According to police spokesman Captain Vincent Pandarum, the security officials radioed their security company control room which in turn contacted the Port Shepstone SAPS. “Two suspects on the roof were arrested by officers from the Port Shepstone K9 Unit who arrived at the scene within minutes.”
He added that the men gained entry into the premises by forcing open a gate close to the air-conditioning units at the back of the mall, from where they made their way up to the roof. Mandla Mlangeni (40) and Nhlanhla Zikode (37) were charged with housebreaking. They appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday this week and the case was postponed to February 14 for further investigation. Both men were also charged with being in possession of housebreaking implements, including including bolt cutters, a crowbar, pop rivet gun, rope, metal cutter, woollen gloves, allen keys, a headlamp and screwdrivers.
“It is believed that the men may be linked to other burglaries reported in the Durban area,” said Captain Pandarum. The case is being investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Joey Nair of Port Shepstone SAPS Detective Service.
