SHEPPIE High was awarded their green flag status at the recent WESSA Eco-Schools’ awards ceremony and received a green flag, a certificate and a ‘high-five’ award for the 2013 recycling campaign.
First team cricket was played against Creston who batted first and scored 129 for six. ‘JJ’ Momberg took three wickets for 27 runs and Sheppie High followed with 130 without loss. Kyle Foggan made 50 runs not out and Justin Parasuraman made 48 not out. PSHS won by 10 wickets. U15 cricket boys also played against Creston and won by four wickets. Impressively, Jurnu Hills took two wickets for eight runs and also contributed 34 of the 96 runs. Cricket against Kloof was played by the U14A, U14B and first teams. Ty Redinger (U14A) took one wicket for five runs. Unfortunately all games against Kloof were lost.
Waterpolo matches were also played recently against Amanzimtoti, where PSHS lost all matches. The senior girls won 7-1 against Scottburgh, with Robynne Theron scoring four of the goals and Nicole Watkins saved all but one goal. The junior girls won 7-2 with Shannon Downes scoring three goals for her team. Lillian Awunyo was named player of the match when their team played netball against Hoërskool Suid-Natal,.but they lost the game by one point and the final score was 20-21.
The first team rugby boys lost 7-15 to Kuswag and the first touch rugby team lost to Fatima 0-5. With the losses also came some victory with both teams beating New Forest 4-3. The basketball boys played against Pinetown and the first team lost, U16s won 23-14, U15s lost, and the U14s won 4-7.
Sheppie athletes continue to do well in the KZN Athletics League. Alu Mbewana was placed first in the U15 triple jump and jumped 12.81m, which is a SA Champs qualifying distance. He also achieved another first place after clearing a 1.75m jump in the U15 high jump event. Enkosi Pandela was placed third after a 6.17m jump in the U17 long jump. Jason Olivier threw a distance of 33.93m in the U17 discus, placing him second and James Mellors ran the 800m in two minutes and 9.3 seconds and was placed third.
