No water for days

It is a struggle to survive without this precious resource.

PARTS of Oscar Nero Road in Marburg have been without water since last Saturday. A resident and a business have been affected and have resorted to buying drinking water from the shops and flushing their toilets with water from a swimming pool.

An employee at the business said their water woes started when contractors working at a nearby business damaged the water pipes. She approached ward councillor, Carole Potter who provided her with the names of people at Ugu Municipality who she thought would be able to help resolve the problem.

“I phoned Ugu on several occasions, to no avail. We can’t wait all day, praying the water supply will be restored. Living for this length of time without this valuable resource has been extremely difficult and frustrating,” she said.

The resident expressed similar sentiments. “We have to cook, bath, wash the laundry and drink. We need water! It has been an absolute nightmare because there are several of us in this household.”

Ugu spokesman Sipho Khuzwayo said that a report of the burst pipe was received by his department on Monday, February 17. “Technicians are currently on site and Ugu has been in constant liaison with the affected business while the relaying of the main water supply is being conducted. Normal water supply will resume as soon as the work is completed,”

For updates and notifications on water interruptions, consumers can visit the municipality’s facebook page, Ugu Municipality: Water and Sanitation Services. Alternatively, they can contact the 24 hour call centre at 08000 WATER (92837) or 039 688 5830/36.
