RAMSGATE residents are being warned about a recent rash of house robberies that has rocked the community.
The warning comes after several houses were burgled recently, all duly reported to Margate SAPS.
The first incident reported took place in Garden Road. “It is alleged that thieves entered the house by forcing a window open,” said police spokesman Captain Gerald Mfeka.
He said the occupants of the house were asleep, but awoke when they heard voices. The robbers then fled, taking two cellphones.
A house in Homestead Road was robbed, with the thieves using the same modus operandi. Again, the occupants heard voices and woke up, at which point the thieves fled, taking cellphones.
In the robbery in Garden Road, the woman occupant heard voices and screamed. “Her neighbours came to her assistance. She noticed that a window was forced open and that her purse containing cash had been taken,” said Capt Mfeka.
Houses were also targeted in John Cane Street, Kemble Road, Julia Street, Glenmarkie Drive, Piet Retief Road, Dunbar and Settlers Crescent in Ramsgate.
Margate police took in six men for questioning but have since released them. “We are following up all available leads and are doing everything in our power to make a breakthrough regarding these robberies,” said Capt Mfeka.
