TWO ‘bully boys’, believed to be members of a group called ‘The Mafia Gang’ at Suid-Natal High in Port Shepstone appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court last Friday.
Marnus Marais (18) and George Labuschagne (19) were arrested and charged with common assault, after they allegedly assaulted a pupil last year. Mr Marais’s case was withdrawn, as it was settled out of court with the victim’s parents.
Mr Marais has undergone a successful diversion programme, Khulisa Social Solutions, and paid an amount of R1000 towards compensation and medical expenses to the victim’s parents.
Khulisa works with a variety of role players including corporations, NGOs and government to co-ordinate and facilitate projects that engage poverty alleviation, crime reduction, victim empowerment, enterprise development and community upliftment.
Mr Labuschagne’s attorney, Christo van Vuuren informed the court that he has officially withdrawn from the case. The state will proceed against Mr Labuschagne, who is expected to appear in court on May 5. The magistrate warned Mr Labuschagne that this was the last time he was postponing the case, and that he had to appear in court with his new attorney.
