A MAN who dragged an 11-year-old child into a sugar cane field in Trafalgar and raped her was handed a 10 year sentence in the Port Shepstone Regional Court recently. The man cannot be named as he is related to the girl.
He pleaded guilty. It’s also believed that he admitted he was drunk when he raped the child on February 22. According to the evidence, three children were walking along a road in Trafalgar, when they were stopped by the man.
The man asked the children for money, and when they refused, he put his hand in their pockets and took their money. He then asked the children where they were going, and continued to follow them home through the sugar cane field.
The man then grabbed the girl near Bushy Vales Farm, and dragged her deep into the sugar cane field and raped her. Meanwhile, the children ran to find help. Along the way, they met two men who tried to help the children search for the girl, but when their efforts proved fruitless, they walked the children home. The case was first reported as a kidnapping.
At 8pm, the raped girl arrived home, after walking about three kilometres from where the incident occurred. The case was reported to Margate SAPS, and the children, who knew the man, helped police to identify him.
