A DISTRAUGHT mother is desperately searching for her infant daughter. According to police reports, on March 20 the mother was waiting at the hospital for her sister when she was approached by a woman who offered her clothes for her baby.
The mother decided not to wait for her sister but to rather meet her at the Umzinto taxi rank. The mother left the hospital in the company of the woman. While at the taxi rank, the mother went to a nearby shop to buy airtime in order to let her sister know she was waiting at the rank. She left her baby with the woman who had accompanied her from the hospital.
When she returned, both the woman and the baby were nowhere to be seen. The matter was reported to the Umzinto police station where a case of child-stealing was opened for further investigation.
Umzinto police are making an urgent appeal to anyone who may be able assist them in locating the woman and the baby to contact the branch commander Captain Pillay at 082 4115043, Warrant Officer Sugan Pillay at 083 7769741 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
The KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni appeals to parents not to leave their children with strangers. “These cases are being reported where parents leave their children with unknown women at taxi ranks, shopping centres and at other institutions,” she said.
