Southport teen killed by policeman’s pistol

The weapon had been left unattended.

A POLICEMAN’S misplaced firearm resulted in a teenager (18) being shot dead at a home in Njambili location, Southport on Tuesday this week.

Spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zanda Wiid confirmed that the youth had been killed at around 2.45pm, by ‘a shot from a pistol’.

She said it was believed that the pistol belonged to a Port Shepstone policeman, who had visited the home earlier that day and had forgotten his firearm there.

Lt-Col Wiid said the 18-year-old victim and a 15-year-old had come across the gun and that a shot had gone off, killing the 18-year-old.

Police have opened a culpable homicide docket, but no-one has been charged as yet.

Lt-Col Wiid said police have also opened another docket, failure to safeguard a firearm, which is being investigated.
