ROELIEN ‘Lientjie’ Vera Roux (33), the former financial manager of the Southcoast Mall, will be spending the next three years behind bars.
Roux, who pleaded guilty to embezzling a total of R5 628 046.07, appeared in the Port Shepstone Regional Court last Friday.
Regional magistate Johan Bester sentenced Roux to six years’ imprisonment, half suspended for five years.
Roux was convicted of 75 counts of fraud, and another 75 counts of money laundering last year.
Magistrate Bester took into consideration her gambling addiction as well as the fact that she was a first time offender, pleaded guilty, and had shown remorse, when making his judgment.
Regional Magistrate Bester said it would not be in the best interests of her two children, with whom she shares a strong bond, that she be removed for a substantial period of time from their lives.
“It would be unjust to impose a sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment,” he stressed.
