AN Umtentweni resident (67) shot an intruder in his home during the early hours of this morning (Monday). The man said he had been suffering from stomach pains and was in bed, but awake, when at about 2am he saw a man standing in the doorway. The man opened fire on the intruder, hitting him in the head and lower body. The wounded intruder was taken to hospital where he later died.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said there had in fact been two men in the house, walking around collecting items. The second intruder fled when his cohort was shot. Lt-Col Wiid said police found several bags on the floor, including the man’s wife’s handbag, which the robbers had planned on stealing.”A panga and a short piece of wood were also found lying near the kitchen,” she said.
An inquest docket has been opened and police are investigating. See the South Coast Herald on Thursday for more on the story.
