THE trial of the alleged murderer of Student Constable Sifiso Brian Ndlovu started in the Port Shepstone Regional Court on Tuesday this week.
St/Cst Ndlovu (26) from Margate was murdered, allegedly by Siyanda Gumede (27) in Jericho Ward, near Nositha, Margate in March last year.
Several witnesses were called, and the court heard various testimonies regarding what unfolded on the fatal evening.
St/Cst Ndlovu is thought to have been walking with a group of acquaintances when one of the men used vulgar language and swore. St/Cst Ndlovu intervened and warned Gumede to stop using vulgar language. St/Cst Ndlovu died at the scene, after Gumede allegedly hit him on the head with a blunt object.
A witness testified that he found St/Cst Ndlovu in the bushes, and he was still breathing, but his eyes had turned white. “We pulled him to the road where he died,” he said.
He explained that St/Cst Ndlovu was injured on the left cheek. “It was an open wound, and it was bleeding,” he said.
Another witness testified that he was on his way to play pool when the incident happened just after 8pm.
He said he had met Gumede and two other men along the road and Gumede was shouting and swearing. A quarrel then broke out between St/Cst Ndlovu and Gumede.
“We intervened and asked them to stop,” he said. He explained that the group continued on its way, and Gumede followed them. “I saw him swing something and hit him (St/Cst Ndlovu) on the side of the face,” he said.
The case has been postponed.
