THE Democratic Alliance wants Umzumbe Municipality councillor Mhlengi Luthuli, who is allegedly involved in a murder case, to be suspended.
“We as the DA are concerned and disappointed with the reports that councillor Mhlengi Luthuli was arrested due to allegations that he is involved in a murder case,” said DA Cllr Leonard Ngcobo.
“He is a public representative and is expected to respect our constitution and the rule of law,” said Cllr Ngcobo.
Cllr Ngcobo added that Cllr Luthuli is the chairman of the council’s critical municipal public accounts committee.
“He has failed to hold his office in good faith and honesty. He has acted in the bad interest of the municipality and in such a way that the credibility and integrity of the municipality are compromised,” said the concerned councillor.
“The Democratic Alliance is calling on Umzumbe speaker Sizwe Ngcobo to suspend Cllr Luthuli with immediate effect pending the finalisation of the case,” he concluded.
Cllr Luthuli is one the four men charged with the murder of Nyon’emhlophe principal, Nkosinathi Zondi, who was shot outside his Umlazi home last year may.
Umzumbe Municipality was asked for comment, but none was received by the time of going to press.
