Uvongo property houses trouble
The municipality has done nothing to assist with the problem.
UVONGO residents are fed up with the disgusting state of the ‘abandoned’ property on the corner of Venice Road and St Moritz Drive.
The overgrown and unsightly property has been standing vacant for more than a decade. Not only is the property an eyesore and a health hazard, but it’s also home to vagrants.
It appears the owner started building on the property, and then stopped. Nothing further has happened on the property, except for the cultivation of oversized weeds and an overgrown verge. It’s believed the owner of the property has subsequently died, and the case has gone to the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
Residents say people have been found to be living in the building, and even using one of the rooms as a toilet. There have been ongoing break-ins in the area, with items being ‘fished’ through windows. Most recently, two extension leads and a bush cutter were stolen from a resident’s property.
Residents have been asking the municipality to assist for the last five years. Recently, the Hibiscus Coast Municipality’s deputy mayor Johnny de Wet promised that something would be done. To date, nothing has. Despite sending these concerns to the municipality, no comment had been received at the time of writing.
One road up, in Geneva Drive, another vacant property stands overgrown, and is in desperate need of being cleared. Requests to the municipality to clear the land have seemingly been ignored. The property is so overgrown that branches of trees hang right over the road. For more photos of the properties, visit our gallery.
