Running into the law…literally!

Umzinto SAPS is investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.

A mini bus and a SAPS patrol van collided on  the R612 Ixopo Main Road near the Vernon Crookes Nature reserve last Wednesday.

The Highflats SAPS patrol van was taking nine awaiting trial prisoners to the Ixopo Magistrate’s Court while the minibus was carrying 12 school children and two teachers from Gemane Primary School to Umzinto Town Hall for a function.

After the collision the taxi veered off the road and into a tree, while the police van ended up on its side.

All the occupants of the taxi were taken to GJ Crookes hospital while the prisoners were treated for minor injuries at the scene by EMRS paramedics. The police constable who was driving the van was taken to Kingsway hospital for further treatment.
