Water woes continue

The municipality has promised that all the affected areas will have water by the end of the day.

SOME areas of Ramsgate and Margate, including Margate Hospital, haven’t had water since yesterday (Wednesday).

Ugu spokesman, Sipho Khuzwayo, said the municipality’s technical services had to shut down the pumps feeding the Margate and Ramsgate south reservoirs, in order to finish the work at Skogheim where a pipe had burst.

He explained that as a result the reserves had run dry. He added that technicians started pumping early today, but the quality of the water was poor due to settlement at the bottom of the reservoir.

“As the day progresses, all the affected areas will be fully restored and will have clean water.  Margate Extension 3 has been fully restored,” he said.

He added that the hospital gets its water from ‘2A’ reservoir, which it is also still filling up.

“We have sent a water tanker to the hospital and surroundings to provide relief, and we are keeping the hospital technical section informed telephonically,” he added.

He revealed that the municipality has contacted the main laundromats in these areas advising them to take note of the water quality before using bulk washing machines.

“Households were also notified early this morning via facebook not to use their washing machines until they were absolutely satisfied with the quality of water coming out of their taps. Through this media we have reached thousands of consumers and the feedback is positive,” he concluded.
