OPINION: March and March ripple effects will be felt for decades

Throughout history, civilizations have always looked for a scapegoat, somebody to blame for the hardships.

June 30 this year, 2026, will be remembered by many as Black Tuesday. It is a dark and tragic time in South Africa, and yet applauded by many.

Immigrants have been crossing our borders for centuries. Desperate people wanting better lives for themselves and their families were welcomed here.

They found jobs on the mines, in industry and in homes.

Generally speaking, the foreigners worked hard and were happily integrated in our cities and farms.

Employers often sought out foreigners to employ as they were viewed as reliable workers.

Times changed! Unemployment surged and times became very tough as the cost of living exploded.

Matric students, as well as degreed youngsters, could not find jobs. Just too many people flooded the job market.

Throughout history, civilizations have always looked for a scapegoat, somebody to blame for the hardships.

The immigrants, who had lived and worked side by side with South Africans, were now targeted as the enemy.

I do not know what the alternative should be, but as a caring person, my heart breaks over this situation.

People who were highly valued are sent back to their country of origin where often, there is nothing.

No family left, no jobs and no future. They leave behind their spouse, their children and elderly parents.

What has touched my heart as much as anything is the uncertain future of the animals that get left behind.

Who will feed and care for these abandoned four-legged creature? Who will care for the dogs and cats and sometimes chickens and goats?

It is a tragedy that has ripple effects that will be felt for decades. The immediate effect will be hardship, anger and painful adjustments that will be insurmountable for many.

Cry, the beloved country and all those who have called it home.
