A BRAZEN thief spotted breaking into vehicles parked at the South Coast Herald was caught by journalists and the Southport police earlier today.
While hard at work, journalist Precious Jili looked up from her computer to see a man tampering with the vehicles in the parking area. He even managed to open the boot of one of the vehicles.
This spurred journalists Sugan Naidoo and Shona Aylward into action. They ran after the man, who appeared to have taken something from the boot.
The chase attracted the attention of the petrol attendants at the Competition Plus service station at Oribi Plaza who joined in the high-speed chase. The driver of a white SUV also stopped to assist and blew his hooter loudly which caused the thief to jump the fence and run towards Harbour View SuperSpar.
Unexpectedly but well timed, Southport police members had just turned a corner to find everyone in hot pursuit of the thief. The quick thinking Southport cops cornered the man, and grabbed him at Harbour View SuperSpar.
It’s believed a handbag was stolen from a shopper at a shopping centre in Port Shepstone earlier this morning.
A warm thanks goes to everyone who helped. A case has been opened, and hopefully the thief has learnt a lesson.
