A POLICEMAN was stabbed to death at a tavern near Margate last Saturday. Detective Warrant Officer Stanley Goodson Mbhele (40), from Margate SAPS, was allegedly at a tavern at Nositha at about 8.30pm.
Police spokesman Captain Gerald Mfeka said that, according to a witness, W/O Mbhele was stabbed once in the chest.
“When police arrived at the scene W/O Mbhele had already been declared dead by paramedics,” said Captain Mfeka.
The scene was attended by cluster commander Brigadier Morris Moodley and Colonel David Govender.
Since the incident, two men have been taken in for questioning but have since been released.
W/O Mbhele joined the SAPS in 1994 and was posted to the community service centre in Margate.
Thereafter, he was tasked to the social crime prevention unit and, up until his death, was a detective at Margate SAPS.
No arrests have been made and Margate SAPS is investigating a murder case.
