Rangers raise funds for Switzerland trip

Every cent is needed to make their dream trip come true.

SELLING cupcakes, bird feeders, trees, pop-up cards and even raffle tickets, Port Shepstone rangers Kathlene Evans (17) and Rebecca Thorncroft (16) have been working around the clock to raise funds for their exciting trip to the World Home – Our Chalet in Switzerland in December this year.

The teens will be representing KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa along with eight other rangers from Gauteng West region, from December 30 to January 14.

Our Chalet is one of the five World Homes of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. It is an International Guide and Scout centre, open to overnight guests and day visitors since 1932.

The girls fund-raising efforts have paid off so far, and they have raised R14 000. But they have less than seven months to raise R26 000 to make their trip a dream come true. Kathlene said fund-raising hasn’t been easy and they have put a lot of hard work into , “But we are determined to reach our goal,” she said.

She started off in the guiding movement as a Teddy at the age of four-and-a-half, and worked her way through Brownies, Girl Guides and now to Rangers. Rebecca moved to the South Coast when she was nine years old, she also worked her way onto Rangers from Brownies. Both girls will be travelling overseas for the first time.

“I can’t wait to taste new food and experience New Year in another country,” said Kathlene. Rebecca said she can’t wait to see snow, meet new people and visit the Alps.

They both agreed that being a ranger has taught them many vital life and leadership skills.

“We have learnt new skills which have made us better woman leaders, like making a fire or changing a tyre,” said Kathlene.
