Khula Community Centre produces marvellous marimba music

The school has succeeded beyond its wildest imaginations.

Deep in the heart of rural Mhlabatini, about 40km inland of Port Shepstone, lies musical talent that the South Coast region can be exceptionally proud of.

Khula Community Centre, run by Ally Minnaar, recently sent a group of 14 young musicians to take part in the Manic Marimba competition at Ashton College in Ballito.

They left in the early hours of the morning and came home late at night, with many smiles, thanks to winning the Manic Medley Category B section.

In addition, music teacher Nkanyiso Xaba was presented with the teachers’ award for his outstanding leadership and dedication.

Sethembile Mzobe thoroughly enjoys the marimba performance.

It was a fantastic day and Ally was delighted.

She explained how seven years ago the centre acquired its first marimba, with no one knowing or being able to predict what would ultimately unfold.

Through a collective effort from the entire staff, united by one vision to create opportunities and inspire hope through music, something special has taken place.

“It’s been an incredible journey so far, a true testament to what can be achieved through passion and belief,” she said.

Ally paid tribute to Nkanyiso for his commitment and patience, which has seen the lives of so many community children from different schools transformed.

“For years, he has poured countless hours into teaching, encouraging and mentoring these young musicians.”

The competition was tough, with many schools competing, and the atmosphere was both thrilling and intense.

Yet when the Khula children stepped onto the stage, they performed with heart and confidence.

Their performance was nothing short of superb and the team was speechless when the Khula children were called forward to receive their prize.

“They were nervous, but they rose to the occasion beautifully and received loud applause,” said Ally.

She said this achievement belongs to everyone who believed in the dream from the beginning, including loyal sponsors.

Ally said the victory was more than just a trophy, but proof that when people work together with love and purpose, extraordinary things can happen.

“We give God all glory for His hand in this perfect experience.”
