Water tariffs to rise
Users can expect to pay 5.5 percent more for water and for sanitation.
CONSUMERS will pay 5.5 percent more for water and 5.5 percent more for sanitation, Ugu mayor Ntombifikile Gumede announced when she delivered the Ugu budget at a council meeting held at the Hibiscus Coast Municipality council chamber last Thursday.
The total amount of the Ugu budget is R1 058 210 152, made out of a capital budget of R336 566 128 and and an operational budget of R721 644 024.
From the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), the municipality has set aside an amount of R 245 189 000 for the water and sanitation infrastructure programme.
“An additional amount of R 36 693 849 from the Equitable Share will be spent to ensure that we continue to provide our people with free basic water via the communal standpipes,” said Ms Gumede.
She added that the national government equitable share grant which amounts to R19 346 765 will be spent towards the cost of supplying free basic metered water and an additional amount of R 86 768 879 has been allocated to subsidise the water tariff.
An allocation of R4 972 872 has been made for rolling out the rural Ventilated Improved Pit toilets, which is a programme that will advance the work to eradicate rural sanitation backlogs from across the Ugu District family of municipalities.
