Bad behaviour out of control

Staff constraints at night and over weekends pose a problem.

GOOD news for Scottburgh residents is that the provincial public protector’s office is now investigating by-laws that have not been correctly policed on the beachfront.

While the liquor act has changed and drinking in public is allowed, the municipal by-law still stands and the Umdoni community has complained about drinking on the beachfront, loud music, urinating in public, indecent exposure, vandalism and petty crime.

The matter has come up for discussion at various community policing forum and council meetings, yet no resolution has been found and implemented.

Municipal by-laws should be policed predominantly by the municipal law enforcement officers. However staff constraints at night and over weekends have seen the matter spiral out of control.

Umdoni Protection Services met with the local SAPS and RTI to find short-term solutions to policing the unruly behaviour, while other options are weighed up.
